Today I had a message come through the chat function of the website saying that a gentleman wanted to book a massage, but was embarrassed about getting an erection during treatment. I then researched an article to share as a response and to answer a few questions about massage etiquette, which has spurred this blog post.
Shower before your appointment - even with a face mask and face shield we can still smell body odour if you chose to go to the gym before an appointment. Also the massage treatments that I offer are customised with essential oils, so it is advisable to leave the oil on for longer lasting benefits from the massage.
Body functions - are normal and occasionally a relaxed body will pass gas, as a therapist this isn't the first time its happened and we will ignore it. Also if an erection happens we will ignore it, so don't worry. You might be embarrassed but as a therapist we are professional and it has happened before - again we will just ignore it. If you do have bad gas or need to pee during treatment, it is ok to ask to pause the treatment to blow your nose, use the bathroom, etc.
Communicate - massages are a relaxing treatment to help soothe away tension, stress and relax the mind and body. We aren't expecting a conversation, and really you would benefit more from the treament if you just allow your body to unwind. Please do let us know if you would like firmer pressure or if a movement is uncomfortable so that we can adjust to make the treatment more comfortable.
Clothing - underwear yes or no? This is personal preference. There are towels and linens in place so that clients are always kept modestly covered. Most clients undress to their underwear for a full body massage and some leave trousers on when having just a back massage, whilst others feel more comfortable in just their underwear. A towel is always provided for modesty.
Consultation - normally it is recommended to arrive 5-10 minutes prior to appointment, but with covid restrictions, we now ask you to arrive at your designated time and to fill out the consultation form online prior to your appointment.
