Travel Tuesday: Desert Island Beauty & Wellness- Part 8: Serum

This is the final edition of my Desert Island Beauty & Wellness Edit! The final item I would pack in my suitcase is an anti-ageing serum that helps me sleep. This series has covered skincare, food, fitness, books and assuming a desert island might not be plush with comfortable mattresses I would take my Sound Sleep Cocoon by Dermalogica to help me get a good night sleep. 


Living in the UK means that for us to be on a lovely hot desert island, it usually takes 8 - 12 hours on a long haul flight and ends in a different in time zone. Yes there are some lovely places to visit in Europe too, but I envision desert islands being in the Caribbean, Far East or South Pacific. So, not only does the time zone affect our sleeping hours, it affects the body's natural circadian rhythm and sleeping habits. In this light weight overnight treatment the Lavandin is slowly released throughout the night to help promote a deeper sleep for longer.

Sound Sleep Cocoon is a revitalising treatment gel-cream that transforms the skin overnight by optimising nighttime skin recovery. It is best applied between 9 - 11pm to aid skin cell renewal. Help restore you skin as this magic little pot helps to hydrate, brighten and revitalise while you sleep. To use this overnight treatment, add one pump to your hand and activate the essential oils by applying this serum last thing at night before going to bed. Smooth onto the skin using light ciruclar movements with your fingertips, this helps to activate the essential oils. Vigorously rub your hands together for 3 seconds and then cup them over your entire face and take three deep breaths. To further help you relax, repeat the trio of deep breaths two more times to relax the mind and body whilst breathing in the essential oils. The Olfactory System is the fastest acting of the five senses because the sinuses go directly to the brain helping you to feel a deeper sense of relaxation more quickly.

sleep Six Steps for restful sleep:

  1. Turn off electronics and dim the lights 30 minutes before bedtime.

  2. Make your room as dark as possible and slightly cool.

  3. Avoid alcohol, sugar and caffeine before bed.

  4. Breathe deeply – it helps calm and relax your body.

  5. Go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day.

  6. In the morning, seek out bright light to help regulate your biological clock.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, a circadian rhythm is a natural, internal process in the body that regulates the sleep-wake cycle and repeats on each rotation of the Earth roughly every 24 hours. If you're in another time zone, your body's natural body clock is disrupted. I found this fact interesting, unfortunately this particular study involved mice, not humans!

A new study has found that chronic disruption of one of the most basic circadian (daily) rhythms - the day/night cycle - leads to weight gain, impulsivity, slower thinking, and other physiological and behavioral changes in mice, similar to those observed in people who experience shift work or jet lag - Science Daily

It is important to get your body into a regular sleep pattern wherever you are in the world and by following a daily regime it will help reduce your jet lag and increase your snooze time more quickly and effectively.
